Featured Topic:

You championed Agile adoption in your organization. Interest grew as your projects become predictable. You led a group of agilists who helped spread the word to more groups. Life was good. Then senior management took notice of the improvements and decided to mandate adoption of Agile. They’ve skimmed some of the books, but don’t have any practical experience. Your agile adoption has just reached a critical stage as it moves from grass-roots effort to management directive. You’re about to lose control of your baby. You’re about to learn that you’ve created a monster.

Education of all parties involved and constant communication are key to the success of any agile effort. But when the people making the decisions learn only enough to become dangerous, they can misinterpret the transparency of the information radiators provided by Scrum. The formal slides will present the case study. The material will be narrated with as much humor as can be interjected into such a grim tale. My hope is to follow the presentation with a question-answer session that will set up in no uncertain terms, the dangers of losing control and handing agile adoption over to the uninformed. This is a cautionary tale of how to set your agile adoption back to the dark ages. Let our tale of woe serve as a lesson to all who hear it! Let our story of repairing the damage, serve as an example that it’s never too late to do the right thing.

  • Lead-in Activity:

As always, the first half-hour of the event is reserved for networking and food. Pizza and pop will be provided, so come hungry, grab a couple slices of pizza, and get to know the other attendees who are making Agile Leadership happen in Chicago.

    Follow-up Activity: "OpenSpace"

Following the talk, attendees will take part in an OpenSpace discussion An OpenSpace Session in progressforum.  At least one topic will expand on the Featured Topic presentation, but attendees are free to propose any topic for discussion.  An OpenSpace session is a high-energy experience:  more structured than chit-chat, less rigid than following an agenda.

If you’ve never participated in an OpenSpace event, be prepared to be surprised!  For more about OpenSpace, see the original definition at AgileOpen.net.

    About the Speaker:

Michael Marchi: Mike is a technical lead and agile champion at Siemens Building Technologies. His first agile experience involved piloting a small eXtreme Programming trial in a predominantly waterfall development environment. The team found a lot of useful tools in XP, but management was uncomfortable with the notion of handing control of development over to the development team. Two years later, he introduced Scrum as a method of managing the development efforts. This offered management enough clear oversight to allow a full-scale trial. Three years later, Mike’s team has several successful Scrum development efforts under their belt on a mid-sized project with multiple teams in multiple locations. He is currently focused on scaling Scrum and rolling it out at the Enterprise level. Mike is a Certified ScrumMaster, Certified Scrum Product Owner, Certified Scrum Practitioner and am the primary agile coach and trainer at Siemens Building Technologies. He has trained Scrum teams in the U.S., Europe and India, and thoroughly enjoys any opportunity to share experiences and knowledge with the Agile Community.
