Featured Topic:
This talk will present and explore the en-vogue topic of the decline of agile. From James Shore's blog post The Decline and Fall of Agile to Alistair Cockburn's Agile 2009 keynote titled I Come to Bury Agile, Not to Praise It," bashing Agile is all the rage, even from some of its innovators. Have the traditional phased processes won out? Has Lean rendered Agile obsolete? Was it really just a fad after all? Should you even care?
For those trying to apply Agile to improve projects, the industry reaction, framing, and attitude does matter. This talk will provide insights into the motivations of the agile pundits and how you can make sense and appropriately react and even exploit these rants to further the agile goals in your organization.
Lead-in Activity:
As always, the first half-hour of the event is reserved for networking and food. Pizza and pop will be provided, so come hungry, grab a couple slices of pizza, and get to know the other attendees who are making Agile Leadership happen in Chicago.
Follow-up Activity: "OpenSpace"
Following the talk, attendees will take part in an OpenSpace discussion forum. At least one topic will expand on the Featured Topic presentation, but attendees are free to propose any topic for discussion. An OpenSpace session is a high-energy experience: more structured than chit-chat, less rigid than following an agenda.
If you’ve never participated in an OpenSpace event, be prepared to be surprised! For more about OpenSpace, see the original definition at AgileOpen.net.

About the Speaker:
Lowell Lindstrom has been involved in developing and deploying software products for over nearly 25 years. He was among the early pioneers in bringing agile software development services to the marketplace. In 1999, as Vice President at Object Mentor, he developed partnerships with the leaders of the Extreme Programming movement, including Kent Beck, Ron Jeffries, and Martin Fowler to develop the ultimate agile learning experience. He was the Organizing Chair of the first North American conference on agile software development (XP/Agile Universe) in 2001 and the Program Chair in 2004, where he was instrumental in unifying the two agile conferences.
Lowell developed the first commercially available course on the business side of agile software development. He is a co-founder and former Director of the Agile Project Leadership Network (www.apln.org). In late 2005, Lowell founded The Oobeya Group, which helps organizations successfully spread the successful use of agile techniques to all teams and functional areas. He is published in the Cutter IT Journal, the Auerbach IS Management Handbook (8th ed.), and various conference proceedings. He is a Certified ScrumMaster, Practitioner, and Trainer.
