Everywhere you turn, someone is claiming to be embracing Agile, or incorporating "Agile Practices" into their day-to-day workplace. But what does it mean to profess to be "Agile"? Agile methods generally promote a project management process that encourages frequent inspection and adaptation, a leadership philosophy that encourages teamwork, self-organization and accountability, a set of engineering best practices that allow for rapid delivery of high-quality software, and a business approach that aligns development with customer needs and company goals. How do you choose which Agile method is right for your organization? Do you go with Agile Unified Process, Feature Driven Development, Scrum, XP, Lean, Crystal, TSP? Join our panel of industry professionals, as we compare and contrast a sampling of Agile Methodologies. Each panelist must be actively using the Method they are defending. If you would like to volunteer to bee a panelist, please contact us and let us know which method you want to represent! Lead-in Activity:As always, the first half-hour of the event is reserved for networking and food. Pizza and pop will be provided, so come hungry, grab a couple slices of pizza, and get to know the other attendees who are making Agile Leadership happen in Chicago. Follow-up Activity: "OpenSpace"Following the talk, attendees will take part in an OpenSpace discussion If you’ve never participated in an OpenSpace event, be prepared to be surprised! For more about OpenSpace, see the original definition at AgileOpen.net. XP Panelist - Jeff Norris: Jeff is a lead consultant at ThoughtWorks. He has developed web applications for over 10 years. He is currently the tech lead on ThoughtWorks’ longest running project. Having worked at companies ranging in size from startup to Fortune 500 and projects ranging from internal applications, to early “eBusiness” websites, to commercial software, Jeff has seen how process and tools can help a project team maintain its success and motivation over the long term. Scrum Panelist - Michael Marchi: Mike is a technical lead and agile champion at Siemens Building Technologies. His first agile experience involved piloting a small eXtreme Programming trial in a predominantly waterfall development environment. The team found a lot of useful tools in XP, but management was uncomfortable with the notion of handing control of development over to the development team. Two years later, he introduced Scrum as a method of managing the development efforts. This offered management enough clear oversight to allow a full-scale trial. Three years later, Mike’s team has several successful Scrum development efforts under their belt on a mid-sized project with multiple teams in multiple locations. He is currently focused on scaling Scrum and rolling it out at the Enterprise level. Mike is a Certified ScrumMaster, Certified Scrum Product Owner, Certified Scrum Practitioner and am the primary agile coach and trainer in SBT. He has trained Scrum teams in the U.S., Europe and India, and thoroughly enjoys any opportunity to share experiences and knowledge with the Agile Community. Mike is currently serving as the board president for the Chicago Chapter of the Agile Project Leadership Network (APLN-Chicago), and will be speaking at Agile 2009 in Chicago this summer. Mystery Panelist – (Could this be you?): If you are interested in joining the discussion as a panelist, let one of the APLN board members know during the networking section (before 6:30). Sponsors...
